Belize City, August 12th , 2014.

The National Song Competition sets the tone for the celebration atmosphere each year for the annual September festivities.This year was no exception, the event kicked off at the Memorila Park in Belize City with four juniors, eight competitors in the Belize Song category, and six competitors in the Carnival Song Category. It was well attended with Belizeans from near and far, as some of the districts brought spectators and fans to cheer on their representatives. At the end of the performances, the winners were declared:

Junior Winners:

1st Place: Cecil Jenkins Jr- with his song "Pocono Bouy"

2nd Plcae: Tara Gill with her song "Carnival Brukdown"

1st Place: Nello Player with his song "Real Belizean"

2nd Place: Ernestine Carballo with song "Celebration Again"

 Carnival Song Category

1st Place: Ivan "TR Shine" Burgess with song "Borderline"

2nd Place: Ernestine Carballo with song "Carnival di Come"


Two New categories were also introduced this year: The People's Choice which was the song with the most votes online and the Breakout Artist of the year, which was selected by the judges as an artist with great potential. Winners in these categories were:

People's Choice/ Belize Song - Nello Player

People's Choice/ Carnival Song - TR Shine


Break-out Artist of the Year/ Belize Song - Shanneka Moir & Earlin Hutchinson

Breakout Artist of the Year/ Carnival Song - Leslie "Bastic" Jenkins


This year for the first time, the competition branched out to the four regions offering both workshops and stage performances to the artists and songwriters residing in the districts. The winners of these regional competitions were the finalists onstage on Saturday Night at the Memorial Park in Belize City.

The competition was created to give both professionals and amateur song-writers and performing artists an opportunity to showcase their original pieces on a grand stage each year. 

The Competition was open to all Belizeans both juniors and seniors. There were entries from groups of persons as well as from individuals. Entries were judged based on: Audience Appeal, Musical Arrangement, Vocal Quality, Lyrical Content, and Stage Performance.

Winners received cash prizes, including for seniors:

1st place- $6000, a trophy, a music video, and an opportunity to represent Belize in the Region

2nd Place - $3000 and a trophy

 Juniors received:

1st place - $1,500 and a trophy

2nd place - $1000 and a trophy

* People's choice for the most popular song- $500

* Breakout Artist of the year-$500


The main sponsors, National Celebrations Commission in collaboration with the Atlantic International Bank hosted the Artists to a "Meet the Finalist" presentation at the Bliss Centre before the actual event on August 2. This gave the artist an opportunity to meet and network and it gave the media an opportunity to meet the finalist. At the event three new music videos from last year's winners were also launched.

 Song writers and Performing Artist are invited to take part in the National Song Competition held each year during the month of August, just in time for the September Celebrations 2014!
