Gales Point Malanti
Gales Point “Malanti” traces its origins to the 18th century, when Africans founded communities along the Sibun and Manatee Rivers and on the Southern Lagoon peninsula.
Gales Point Village likely emerged as a secondary maroon settlement consisting largely of formerly enslaved Africans and disbanded African soldiers from the West India Regiment.
Krismos Bram
Every Krismos and Boxing Day, drummers, singers and revelers go bramming from house to house through the village. They dance to call-and-response brukdong songs that tell of experiences in the community. Host families offer homemade light-cakes and beverages as they move along.
Sambai
Sambai is traditionally associated with lunar and agricultural cycles. Dancing around a bonfire, men and women challenge each other as they jump Sambai to the drum rhythms of kunjai, brukdong, and bram songs. The festive event demonstrates continuity of the community’s African heritage.

On 9 December 2025, Krismos Bram and Sambai of Gales Point Manatee was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
