George Price Day 2025

January 15 marks the birthday of National Hero Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price. This day celebrates the legacy of Belize’s only Premier and first Prime Minister.

This 2025, the National Institute of Culture and History, along with collaborators, unveiled the “Good Belizeans”, a street exhibit, and a botanical garden at the historic Price Family Home on Pickstock St. in Belize City.

Minister’s Message

It is inspiring to see the continued efforts of Good Belizeans, both named and unnamed, who supported Mr. Price and continue to contribute to the country’s progress.

Let us work together to build a progressive, prosperous Belize. May this booklet of his letters inspire us all to act with purpose and determination in fulfilling the vision Mr. Price set for us.

1919

George Price is born in Belize, the third child of William Cadle and Irene Cecilia Price.

September 10

1931

George Price survives the catastrophic Hurricane of 1931.

1956-62

George Price serves as Mayor of Belize City from 1956-1962.

1960-64

George Price wins elections from 1960-1964 and becomes Belize’s First Minister and later the Premier, leading Belize towards self-government in 1964.

September 21

1981

George Price leads Belize into Independence.

September 20

2000

Rt. Hon. George Price receives the Order of National Hero, Belize’s highest award. He is recognized as Father of the Nation.

September 19

2011

George Price passes away.

January 15

2021

George Price’s birthdate is declared a national holiday in Belize.

The Rt. Hon. George Price, more than anyone else, is unquestionably the foremost symbol of Belize’s struggle for self-government and independence. His legacy continues to be admired, discussed, and studied in an effort to develop our national identity and national consciousness. For this very reason, we are pleased to present a set of iconic speeches that will help students, researchers and citizens engage more thoroughly with Mr. Price’s legacy and contribute to the development of Belize.
